Cuban Physicians Exceed 50,000 Eye Surgeries in Uruguay

Montevideo, Jul 11 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban medical brigade working at the ”Jose Marti” Eye Hospital in this capital exceeded 50,000 ophthalmologic surgeries, a milestone that will be recognized at a public ceremony on Aug. 4.

The figure, including cataracts, pterygium (proud flesh in the eyes), and oculoplastics, is an accumulated history of the brigade, whose first members arrived in Uruguay in 2005, in the framework of an agreement between both countries, through which more than 493,000 patients were assisted in that period.

2014, a year in which we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Operation Miracle program, more than 2,300 surgeries have been submitted to patients with refractive disorders, tax affectations to treat oculoplastics, and retina affectations, as well as cataracts.

Cuba Hosts Congress of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

Havana, May 6 ,By Prensa Latina: Delegates from 21 nations of America, Europe and Africa have confirmed their attendance at the IX Cuban Congress of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery to be held from May 17 to 21 in this capital.

The working sessions will take place in the Conference Center simultaneously with the II Meeting of Otolaryngology Specialists graduated in Cuba and the V Congress of Logopedy and Phoniatry.

According to Professor Antonio Paz Cordova, president of the organizing committee, the event is an opportunity to bring together professionals from the country and abroad to promote the exchange and update on the latest developments in this field and related sciences.

Major Cuban Tourist Fair Opens

Havana, May 6 (Prensa Latina) Leading tourism firms are attending the 34th International Tourism Fair, FITCUBA 2014, that opened today in this capital with a full agenda of seminars and business meetings.

During the opening ceremony at the emblematic Hotel Nacional de Cuba, established in 1930, keynote speeches were delivered by the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization, Taleb Rifai, and France’s Tourism Minister, Sylvia Pinel, as France is guest of honor at this event.

The meeting will run from May 6-10, with receptions and talks at the Morro-Cabaña tourist complex, a well-preserved colonial fortress alongside the Bay of Havana.

One day is reserved for presenting the latest products for Cuban tourism.

Fifteenth Cuban Film Festival Concludes in New York

Washington, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) The 15th edition of the Havana Film Festival in New York concludes today with awards in the categories of best film, director, screenplay and documentary.

After eight days of presentations and parallel events that included conferences and theoretical workshops, the festival that brought 45 films, 24 from Cuba, and the rest from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Ecuador, United States, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, is coming to a close.

From the screenings in Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens (three of five New York counties), 10 films and six documentaries are contending for Havana Star prizes.

According to organizers, the winning film will enjoy a week of public screenings at the Quad Cinema theater, as part of the Quad Flix program.

Havana, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) Cuba’s Foreign Ministry says that the recent revelations about the U.S. government plan to create a “Cuban Twitter” for destabilizing purposes proves that Washington persists in its subversive plans against the island.

Spanish Company Willing to Give Information About Anti-Cuban Network

According to a report published yesterday by the Associated Press (AP) news agency, the U.S. government plan to create a communications network it called ZunZuneo was carried out with the goal of gaining acceptance among young Cubans in order to later push them toward dissidency.

The AP  investigative report showed that the plan to undermine the Cuban government was promoted by the USAID agency (U.S. Agency for International Development), through clandestine front companies, with financing routed through foreign banks.

Cuba Has World’s Third Highest Percentage of Female Legislators

Paris, Mar 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuba has making great progress in the struggle for women”s emancipation and is now the world”s third ranking country in terms of female members of parliament, said Mariela Castro here.

Speaking with Prensa Latina, Castro, who herself is a Cuban legislator and director of the National Sex Education Center (CENESEX), said that female legislators represent 48.36 percent of the parliamentarians in the National Assembly of Peoples Power and Cuba has increasing numbers of women in management positions.

“We have not achieved everything, but we are making progress in challenging the sexist attitudes that remain,” she said, explaining that the struggle for the emancipation of women, undertaken by the Federation of Cuba Women (FMC), has never minimized men; to the contrary, it has brought important elements to the discussion, giving “everyone the capacity to change the patriarchal culture inherited from colonial and neocolonial systems.”

The CENESEX director was here along with a team from the Center, to attend an international colloquium on Gender, Culture and Society, where she spoke about transexuality.

Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart Confirms Cuba’s Solidarity with Russia

Moscow, Mar 27 (Prensa Latina) Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, scientific advisor for Cuba”s Council of State, said here today that his country is grateful for Soviet and Russian support since 1959, and at a moment of threats and sanctions, he reiterated Cuba”s solidarity with Russia.

“We feel especially proud of our relationship with our brothers at a time when sanctions and threats are resurfacing,” Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart stated after speaking at the launch of the Russian language edition of the book “Breve Historia de Cuba” (A Brief History of Cuba) at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

Cuba Guarantees Security and Protection for Foreign Investment

Havana, Mar 25 (Prensa Latina) The legal protection and security of investments will be included in a clause of guarantee of the Foreign Investment Law, in line with international agreements and Cuba”s Constitution and regulations, said a legislative source today.

In remarks to journalists as the process of preparation and presentation of the bill nears completion, President of the Parliamentary Commission of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Jose Luis Toledo, highlighted the significance to respect the whole implicit legal framework that accompanies the text.

In this regard he said the legislation will be based on the nation’s sovereignty and independence and mutual benefit for the country’s economic development, as approved in previous discussions with the members of Parliament.

Toledo insisted that foreign investment completes efforts for the country’s development, and will be oriented to sectors in which it is impossible to advance without external financing.

Cuba Keeps Reducing Mortality Rate by Diabetes

Havana, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is keeping a trend to reduce the mortality rate by diabetes and a considerable increase of the life scope in patients affected by diabetes, said a report by local specialists Thursday.

Cuba counts on an integral program including the three levels of public health attention: primary, secondary and tertiary, with emphasis on prevention, said Maylin Palmero Molina, promoter of the Genetics and Biotechnology Enginnering Center of Cuba (CIGB).

Palmero Molina said the strategy is also taking charge of following a good metabolic control and access to new therapies to reduce the impact of the complications of diabetes.

In the entire country, programs to educate children and young people with diabetes type 1, the attention to pregnancy for diabetic women and attention to diabetic patients type 2, besides the program for treatment opf ulcers of so-called “diabetic foot”, are being developed.

Recientemente se incorporó Rusia, país con un alto estándar regulatorio perteneciente al grupo BRICS (que agrupa a Brasil, Rusia, India, China y Sudáfrica), aseveró. Para ello, las autoridades rusas realizaron una inspección a las instalaciones productivas cubanas, con el objetivo de evaluar el cumplimiento de las buenas prácticas de manufactura en el Heberprot-P, manifestó Herrera.
