Cuban and US jazz musicians will participate in the First International Jazz Band Meeting, scheduled from March 22 to 25 in Havana, organizers said.
Devoted to local musicians Rafael Somavilla (1927-1980) and Chico O’Farrill (1921-2001), the event will bring together students from the Schools of Art in Havana and US St. Olaf Jazz Band, directed by Dave Hagedorn.
In its first edition, the event’s programme includes concerts, lectures and discussions regarding world peace and the role of jazz to bring about changes in society.
The event is presided by musician and director of the Joven Jazz Band, Joaquín Betancourt and will feature several venues, including Teatro Mella, Casa del Alba Cultural, Instituto Superior de Arte, Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán and Escuela de Música Guillermo Tomás.
The First International Jazz Band aims to promote and encourage the dissemination of jazz among the younger generation and to recreate the culture of jazz bands.
