Details of Rays’ planned Cuba trip come into focus

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Chris Archer (22) delivers in the first inning of the game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays in Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015.

The Rays’ spring trip to Cuba is close to being finalized.

The current plan is for the team to play one afternoon game against the Cuban National Team on March 22 in Havana.

The game is set to be televised by ESPN and broadcast on Rays radio.

MLB’s official announcement of the trip and release of further details are pending final approval from the governments.

The Rays will be the first major-league team to play in Cuba since the Orioles in 1999. The Rays were chosen among several interested teams via lottery.

The Rays’ trip was originally tentatively slated for March 28-30, so the new plan will cause further changes to their spring training schedule.

Per the team website, the Rays have canceled a March 21 game against the Braves in Port Charlotte and added a March 29 game against the Blue Jays in Dunedin and a March 30 game against the Red Sox in Port Charlotte. The regular-season opener is April 3.
